Prince Albert is a town, a landscape, a place that I had the good fortune to discover in 2023, during my first time in South Africa.
Arriving via the swartberg pass, I was struck by the expressiveness of the stone, the generosity of its language and its materiality. As soon as I emerged from the curves and entered the town, I was fascinated by a family of dead trees still standing, a mesmerising landscape accentuated by the reds and ochres of the stone and the
greens and yellows of its lichens. I stayed there for an afternoon, admiring the light and the landscape formed by the town at the entrance and exit of the canyon.

Both of us share common ideas and continue to discuss the landscape, its construction, its definition, its materials and colours, and its architecture. We believe these themes are fundamental to convey in exchange projects such as this one: reflecting on one’s living space, awareness of materials, one’s territory, and its visual and organic riches.
We have work on an outside wall around 35 metres. As the week progressed, we could see the children settling in and developing an instinctive feel for figurative
art and spatial awareness. We could also see their ability to let themselves be guided by their tools and colours.
By the end of the week, it had become «completely common» for them to discuss compositions and talk about concepts such as territories and landscapes.
We carried out work outdoors to restore and create a mural painting in the centre of their children’s playground.
As the walls of the primary school had not been restored since the school’s official opening, we focused on the most damaged wall so that, within the limits of our human and financial resources, we could provide them with vibrant scenes to brighten up their walls as we can.
